Scrapbooking Tips

Scrapbooking Tips ‘n Techniques

Tips come in handy when you ask the question: where do I start? Tips can be helpful when getting started scrapbooking or card making. My first tip to you would be this: there is no right or wrong way to start. Each person has their own special way of displaying their thoughts and passions and designs. Here I will discuss some great layout tips.

The tips I found most useful were in organizing my photos. Sometimes, just knowing what type of pictures you have will define your theme. You can see by my examples above, layouts can be unlimited. Depending on whether you are talking to a seasoned scrapbooker or a beginner, the tips you’ll get will vary. Tips also vary depending on whether you are creating digital scrapbooks or creating scrapbooks by hand. When I first started, one of the best tips I was given was to divide my pictures by event, such as vacation, holidays, school days, pets, etc. This helps you to define the type of layouts you can use. These tips are important because they will keep your photos in the same theme, which will help your project flow more smoothly.

When selecting your photos, the next tips are to not limit yourself and don’t feel compelled to include all the pictures you have. When I scrapbook, I want my pictures to “tell the story”. Get rid of those pictures that are repetitive or are blurry. You want to make sure all your pictures are clear, and hopefully, very colorful.
Once you choose your layout, the next tip can either make you or break you. First, imagine the possible embellishments you could use. The list of embellishments is quite lengthy; ribbons, eyelets, brads, quotes, punches, page crimpers and stencils are just a few. If you don’t have embellishments on hand, many online scrapbook retailers offer downloadable embellishments for FREE! If you are able to download these, be sure to use a heavier card stock when printing them. Now, all you have to do it cut them out.

Another one of my embellishment tips is to use household or craft notions. I use buttons, thread, safety pins, yarn and many other things I find around the house. Embellishments must not be over done or they will take away from your pictures, but again, you will be the judge of that. Here’s a tip for storing all that good stuff: These types of product will keep your papers and embellishments together by project, theme, or however you decide works best for you.

Another one of the tips I have to offer is to make sure you have an area where you can spread out and have plenty of lighting. There are so many different ways to make a scrapbook; some people do it page by page while others organize their scrapbooks by laying out all the pages at once. I choose to do my pages one at a time. That way I have more room to display my embellishments, stickers and quotes around my page so I can experiment with different looks. The tip I have here is to have organizers available to store your unfinished pages and any embellishments you are using. This will help you greatly if you are in a space where you can’t leave your project out. You don’t want to have to start over and pull everything back out when you are able to work on the pages again. When creating a great scrapbook, we should never hesitate to share the tips we’ve learned along the way or use other crafters’ tips.

Here’s the last of today’s tips: making a scrapbook doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate. Sometimes, a layout focusing on one or two pictures doesn’t need many embellishments. You want to make sure that your embellishments don’t detract from your pictures. How’s that for some easy but insightful scrapbook tips?
